Antilliaanse oerkracht
In Zjeitu geeft Ilse Frech haar typering van de Antillen. Intuïtief zoekt de fotografe naar de ziel van de eilanden, naar het (oer)gevoel van een onzichtbaar verleden en de mystieke kracht van de doorleefde grond. Ze legt de sporen in het landschap vast; de verblijven van de slaven bij Kabayé of de karkassen van dode honden op voormalige plantages. Frech zoekt de mens en zijn karakter en treft vooral sterke vrouwen. Zij staan voor de Antilliaanse oerkracht. Op de eilanden heerst een matriarchale cultuur: de vrouwen werken, brengen kinderen groot en dragen het leven over van generatie op generatie. Het landschap en het verleden vormen het dwingende en overheersende decor waartegen het leven zich afspeelt: ruig, droog, warm en zwoel.

Elementary power of the Antilles
In Zjeitu, Ilse Frech shows the Antilles as she sees them. Intuitively, the photographer looks for the islands’ soul, for the (archetypal) feeling of an invisible past and the mystical force of the seasoned earth. She records the traces in the landscape, the slave huts near Kabayé or the carcasses of dead dogs found at former plantations. Frech looks for individuals and their characters, and finds, most notably, strong women, who represent the elementary power of the Antilleans. A matriarchal culture exists on these islands: the women work, bring up their children and pass life on from generation to generation. The landscape and the past form a commanding and overwhelming backdrop
against which life is played out: stark, dry, warm and sultry.
